Task 1 & 2
1. Look up top grossing films of 2016 - Write down top five and their producers/exhibitors and when they came out.
Top grossing films of 2016:
1. Finding Dory - Released 17/6/2016, distributed by Walt Disney
2. Rogue One - A Star Wars Story - Released 16/12/2016, distributed by Walt Disney
3. Captain America - Civil War - Released 6/5/2016, distributed by Walt Disney
4.The Secret Life of Pets - Released 8/7/2016, distributed by Universal Studios
5. The Jungle Book - Released 15/4/2016, distributed by Walt Disney
The big six film companies are Sony, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Disney and Universal.
Film releases often correlate to school holidays, with many films being shown in cinemas during the summer holidays.
This list includes an animated film, a superhero film, a sci-fi film and two family films. The first three films are sequels (or a continued part of a franchise), and all five can be counted as blockbusters aimed towards a younger audience.
All of the films were produced by two companies of the Big Six, Walt Disney or Universal.
Two of the films are animated, while the rest are live action.
The list does not include film genres such as drama, independent or foreign.
I think the target audience for most blockbusters are young children, as if the film involves "cute" or well-known characters, they are likely to buy into it more than if it were a more serious film (i.e purchasing merchandise such as plush toys, accessories etc)
2. Have a look at release schedule in the UK for December 2016, January 2017 and Feb as we approach awards season and have a big blockbuster lead up in the fall. What are your findings?
